can you tell what part of the army/military someone is in from their uniform?
FIRST OFF: please bear with me since im pretty much clueless around the whole subject. anyways...
I've seen some uniforms with the traditional green hat thing
and more formal.. would you call that a shirt? Jacket? ..I don't know
kind of like this:

and then some with a camoflauge-y baseball cap thing
with what looks more like a 1 piece.. ensemble

Would you be able to tell what duty a soldier does based on the uniform he has? Maybe they.. no, nevermind... help?
You can tell a lot from the uniform. You'll usually be able to tell what country (note the US emblem on the soldier in the first pic), and with some reference or experience tell what branch they are in. The more formal like in your first image linked is the Class A uniform of the US Army. Slightly older since we don't use that style of headgear anymore with the shirt, tie, and jacket. The other picture depicts the standard duty uniform, the Army Combat Uniform (ACU) which replaces/replaced the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) that was the darker green camouflage you would see in older movies and tv shows. The baseball cap thing would be the patrol cap, usually only worn on detail, as we now use the beret.
You can also tell what branch the soldier would be in the Class A because we will wear a pin of our branch (signal, quartermaster, etc) to give an idea of what they might do but not specifically. Then on both uniforms will be patches that will indicate what unit they are with.
From the first picture, the soldier is just finishing basic training I'd say, since he displays no awards/ribbons on his left breast pocket, nor a marksman badge, nor a branch designation on his collar. Since he shows no stripes, he's an E1.
The second picture is just how one should properly wear the ACU.
