John "The Beast" Mugabi vs. Juan "The Hammer" Roldan?
Possibly the two strongest middleweights of the 80s. I'll take Roldan by KO based on his ability to burrow up and under and drill opponents with tight hooks to the body and head. James Hard "Rock Green" showed that a short, strong fighter can utilize this effectively against Mugabi. He came inside of JM's obscenely wide punches and hurt him badly with short chops to the head. He just didn't have the power to stop him.
Roldan does. If Hagler and Hearns were not around I believe Juan would have been middleweight champion of the world. He was the strongest middleweight I've ever seen. An absolute brute.
Hearns said Roldan hit him harder than anyone. Hagler called him his strongest, toughest opponent. That's good enough for me. He would get inside of Mugabi's wide punches the same way Green did and batter him unmercifully. Roldan by KO within 5.
I met Michael Nunn in november of 89' after he stopped Roldan and he told me he was never hit so hard in his life. He showed me the bruises on his back and sides and said it took all he had to take him out. Mugabi is a quitter as the Duane Thomas fight proved. He gets poked in the eye then turns his back and crys for the fight to stop? Roldan would have pummeled Mugabi inside of 10 rounds. The beast was fierce but to wild and awkward.
