Is it time to add more weight to my workout to avoid the plateau effect?
I just turned 16 and I've been told a lot that my body is still growing but I'm slender and have been trying to get ripped since April of last year and my workouts have been steady most of the time but there have been some episodes where I haven't worked out consistently for about a month or two. Since school got out 3 weeks ago to this day I've been weight lifting every other day doing: dumbbell press with 35 pounders, 3x10; dumbbell curls with 25 pounders, 3x16 (8 w/ each arm); hammer curls with 25 pounders, 3x16 (8 w/ each arm). Then I do 3 sets of 25 curl ups. Afterwards I do 2 push up burnouts and lately on my first burnout I've been doing 30 push ups and on the 2nd burnout I do 20 for a total of 50. Since its been 3 weeks, is it time to increase the weight or stay where I'm at? Also, if you feel like it, what else could I add to my routine to get a bigger upper body? Thanks a bunch.
The answer is yes. Always yes. You should be attempting to raise your weight every week.
Without spending 30 minutes writing an exercise program (there are plenty to be found online if you want to google it), I'll mention 2 things:
1. Bench press with a barbell, not dumbells. Dumbells are better for "true" strength. They force you to stabilize, and use your shoulders and entire arm to keep them steady. A barbell will really put the focus on your pectoral muscles. If you want a larger chest, lay off the dumbells for a while. A smith machine is even better.
2. Triceps!!!! You are crippling your bench by ignoring your triceps! Also, your triceps are really what makes your upper arms look bigger. Start hitting your triceps hard - equally as hard as your biceps.
Here's a quick test. You didn't say how much you weigh, but if you consider yourself to be in "OK" shape, load up a barbell with your weight in plates. Have a friend nearby, just in case!!! How many times can you bench it? When your muscles fail, is it your chest that is burning, or is it your triceps? Dimes to dollars if you've been ignoring your triceps, you'll have a hard time benching your weight more than a couple times. You will have a VERY hard time growing your chest if your triceps are making it impossible for you to exert your pectorals.
Good luck!
