20 Series
What is the voltage drop across the 20 ohms resistor in series with these three resistors in parallel?

A voltage of 20 v is sent across a circuit that is made of one part which includes resistors of 30, 25, and 15 (ohms). This component is in series with the aforementioned 20 ohms resistor. Also, would would be the total power output dissipated? How would I draw it? Thanks for any tips.

First, find the equivalent resistance of the 3 parallel resistors:
1/Req = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 = [R2·R3 + R1·R3 + R1·R2] / R1·R2·R3
Req = R1·R2·R3 / [R2·R3 + R1·R3 + R1·R2] = 7.14 Ω

Now find the current in the series resistor:
V = IR ──► I = V/R = (20) / (20 + 7.14) = 0.74 A

Finally, find the voltage drop across the series resistor:
V = IR = (0.74)(20) = 14.74 V

Thanks for looking at our 20 Series information.
