A ball of mass 0.54 kg moving east (+x direction) with a speed of 3.50 m/s collides head-on with a 0.720 kg?
A ball of mass 0.540 kg moving east (+x direction) with a speed of 3.50 m/s collides head-on with a 0.720 kg ball at rest. If the collision is perfectly elastic, what will be the speed and direction of each ball after the collision?
ball originally moving east
speed?
I reallly need help.
0.54 . 3.5 = 0.54 Vi + 0.72 . Vii ( Conservation of momentum )
0.54 . 3.5^2 = 0.54 Vi^2 + 0.72 . Vii^2 ( conservation of kinetic energy, because of elastic collision)
These are the two equations. They cam be combined to produce a quadratic in either Vi or Vii.
Vi might be negative ( it might bounce backwards from the collision ) so set up the equation to solve for Vii
Your calculator should have a quadratic solving function. Mine hasn't.
