How do you manually remove a virus from a PC?
My PC has sadly caught an anoying virus it some form of Trojan called 'swmyiqk.dat' All my anti virus software recognises its a threat but none can remove it (I tried about four diferent types). If i grab it and drag it to the bin some of it deletes but then it re-generates its self, the twat. Tried re naming it changing file type and that but its still there!
Any ideas before I remove it from my hard drive sing a ball-pein hammer?
There's no one single procedure for removing stuff like that manually. It depends on what it's done to your computer.
Generally, it will have something running on the system. That's how it knows when you're trying to delete its files, and how it restores itself.
So generally, you'd first want to kill that running process somehow. You might be able to spot it in your task manager, in the processes tab. It helps a lot if you're basically familiar with what's supposed to be in there in the first place. See something you're not sure about? Google it.
You might be able to skip all that by simply booting into safe mode. Or you could try the windows program called config32.exe (an executable located in your windowssystem32 directory (in windows XP anyway, don't know about Vista)), and use that to boot with only the most basic set of drivers possible.
You could also use some small, free program like Autoruns, which can disable the process from starting at bootup (assuming you can spot it amongst all the other stuff that's supposed to be there. Again, it helps to be basically familiar with what's SUPPOSED to be there...).
One way or the other, if you can boot up the computer with your malicious process not running interference for itself, you might be able to simply run your antivirus program in that environment and eliminate the whole problem right there.
Another shortcut that *might* work, would be to restore a savepoint from a day or week or month past, or anyway from before you got infected. But a lot of malware will infect those savepoints too.
If you really have to delete all the bits and pieces yourself, you can probably work out what they all are from doing google searches on the parts you've been able to find (like that file name you mentioned).
You'd still need to disable the thing's running process, and after that you might need to get hold of some special programs like RegDelNull and DelInvFile, because sometimes these things will protect themselves by creating malformed files or registry entries, which cannot be deleted in the normal way.
I've also run across things that are very resistant to attempts to keep them from loading at bootup. There's a little program called "The Avenger" that can deal with that...
I might mention that if you go screwing around like this without being a bit careful, you may end up trashing your OS.
But yeah, it is kind of an adventure, of sorts.
I've gone down this road many times, cleaning stuff out of the computers at work.
