How do you drill into the metal above a window frame? ?

Hi there - I am trying to hang a curtain rod for fairly heavy curtains.

The rod came with nylon fasteners/anchors + screws. I can drill through the drywall but after about 3/4 inch, I hit metal. I can't get a hole deep enough for the 1 inch fasteners to be flush with the wall. I don't think smaller fasteners will hold the rod.

I broke my drill bit so I got a pretty serious DeWalt Cobalt one that the guy at Lowe's recommended for metal. I have been drilling into this one spot for some time with no success at all - the drill (18 V) just does not bite into the metal.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong... + what I should be doing?

Thanks! :)

Your problem is there is no place for the bit to take a bite into the metal. It simply is spinning on the surface like an ice skater on ice. You need a center punch or a pin punch, one which will fit the hole you have and still reach the metal beneath. Whack it with a hammer and you create a small divot in the metal where the bit can take purchase and start to cut the metal instead of simply slide on the surface. If you look at the end of the bit, you will see it is NOT pointed but rather flat and you need that dent in the metal so that small flat spot can dig into the hole you started with the punch as the bit twists. Also, use a very tiny drill bit rather than the full size bit to drill a pilot hole first. It is MUCH easier to drill a tiny hole first to guide the bit for the bigger hole rather than just use the full size bit by itself. Use a center punch to create a starter dent in the metal. Use a small drill bit to drill a pilot hole. Finally, use the full size bit to finish.

Thanks for looking at our Dewalt Inch information.
