Hammers for Increased Work Efficiency
Since as early as 2,600,000 BCE, mankind has used hammers to deliver an impact on an object. Today, this hand tool is most commonly used to drive in nails, forge metal, break objects as well as fit parts together. This article explores three types of hammers that have gained popularity for the sheer convenience they provide to users.
Slide Hammer
The slide hammer is a must-have for any do-it-yourselfer who likes to tinker with cars. To pull out a dent, the user needs to hold the handle of the slide hammer and screw or hook the other end into the dent. Then, the weight is whipped towards the handle. The force exerted pulls out the dent easily.
While the force of the slide hammer is very useful to pull out a part without much effort, the user must be in control of it to avoid further damage to the vehicle.
Impact Hammer
An impact hammeris used in structural and modal analysis to learn the response of a component or system to impacts of varying amplitude and duration.
The tool is struck on a mechanical structure and response information is collected from accelerometers mounted on it. While a single accelerometer yields transfer and transactional characteristics of this structure, integrating the responses from several accelerometers mounted at various points facilitates modal analysis.
Force and pulse duration are the most critical specifications for impact hammers. These are rated by minimums and maximums. The highest frequency for which the response will be tested is another specification, which can be altered by using accessory tips.
Impact hammers use a variety of striking tips composed of different material and hardness. Harder tips deform less and have shorter pulse duration as compared to softer ones. As a result, the highest frequencies are measured using the harder tips. Extender masses may be set to concentrate the energy content further.
Air Hammer
An air hammer uses highly pressurized air to drive a hammer into a workpiece for shaping, scoring or smoothing purposes. Impacting a workpiece several thousand times per second, with pressures of several dozen pounds per square inch (PSI), an air hammer enables metal shaping in a matter of minutes without much manual labor.
While a hammer tip is used for smoothing and shaping, a chisel one is used for cutting and scoring. Aluminum, copper and other soft metals are easy to shape and polish; stronger metals like stainless steel consume pressurized air rapidly and need the air hammer set at maximum PSI levels. Then again, smoothing jobs need lower pressures as compared to shaping ones.
The biggest benefit of an air hammer is that it allows metal shaping without heating it in a forge, thus providing a very safe working environment and the convenience of minimum labor to craftsmen.
