Anyone Know The Name or Function of this Thin Hammer?
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk80/besunny/thinhammer.jpg
A foot long, and very thin. Very small striking head (about 3/16" diameter) and chisel type opposite side. It's vintage --- old,.
My first thought was "sheet metal," but one this small? Maybe for something like leather work?
I rate answers, link or links helpful

That looks like what we used to call a "Tinker's hammer" or sometimes a 'rivet hammer'. It was used in the forming of soft metal, like copper, lead, pewter, etc - sometimes decorative. The chisel side could be used to cut small (or thin) stock, or spreading a small rivet. The other would be used in the fine metal working.
An "upholsterer's hammer" is very similar, but would not have the chisel end. (I'm a woodworker who's done quite a bit of furniture making, including setting upholstery tacks - I've never had an upholstery hammer (aka 'tack hammer') with a chisel end.
If the metal is soft, then I'd lean more towards a "Tinker's hammer" - as a soft metal head was often used to protect the striking surface of whatever was being worked on, such as riveting, or decorative hammering. Old 'pie safes', and raised tin panels are good examples of the type of work this hammer would be suited for.
Rather difficult to say, since you didn't provide anything to reference its size (of the metal head) - but I've seen these with handles as small as 6 inches, and heads of only a couple of inches, for use in delicate work (jewelry, for example)
Unfortunately, Wikipedia does not have an image of a Tinker's Hammer, or reference to one, nor could I find one in a quick image search. But I remember seeing hammers like that in old metal working tool kits - the type used by a traveling 'smith', or Tinker, who would repair the small metal pots and pans, and so on, and also by those who did jewelry (though they used a smaller version).
Have Fun
