Impact Printers vs. Non-impact Printers

Besides the monitor, the printer is another important device you must have for your printing needs. Depending on the type of job you have, so would the type of printer you need to purchase. Generally, as some printing reviews would suggest, printers has two categories: impact and non-impact. The impact printer is able to create an image by using pins or hammers to press an inked ribbon against the paper.

A classic example of this impact printer is the typewriter, which uses small hammers to strike the ribbon. Each hammer is embossed with the shape of a letter, number or symbol. That shape is transferred through the ink ribbon onto the paper, resulting in a printed character. Typewriters are widely used those days in offices until the birth of non-impact printers.

Non impact printers, as per some online printing company reviews use other means to create an image. The most popular types of non-impact printers are the inkjet printers and laser printers. Inkjet printers uses tiny nozzles to spray droplets of ink onto the page; while laser printers work like photocopiers – using heat to bond microscopic particles of dry toner to the specific parts of the page.

When you are thinking of buying a printer, you must consider first how you plan to use it. Do you need to print documents only? Or graphics and images capabilities are important? Do you need a color printer? Will you need to print a wide variety of fonts in many sizes? How quickly do you want your documents to print be printed?

When evaluating printers, some printing reviews suggest that you must consider four criteria in selecting a printer that suits your need:

Image Quality.  Another term for image quality is print resolution. Print resolution is measured in dots per inch (pdi). The more dots per inch the printer can produce, the higher the image quality. For instance, most medium-quality ink jet printer and laser printers are able to print 300 or 600 dots per inch, which is fine for most daily business applications. Most printing business owners use professional quality printers that offer resolutions of 1800 dpi or even higher to produce colorful presentations, folders, greeting cards, or renderings.

Speed. The speed of a printer is measured in the number of pages per minute (ppm) it can print. Most printers have different ppm ratings for text and graphics because graphics generally take longer to print. As print goes up, so does the cost. Professional laser printers are able to print up to 50 ppm compared to consumer level printers that offer print speeds of 6 or 8 ppm only.

Initial cost. Because of the wide variety of printers that are available now in the market, the cost of it has fallen dramatically; but the speed, capabilities and features have improved spectacularly. It is now very much possible for you to buy a good quality ink jet printer for personal use for $100 or less.  Color printers, as expected, often cost more than black-and-white printers. But not that high compared to the past years.

Operational Cost. The cost of the ink or toner and the maintenance depends on the printer's type and model. Many different types of printer paper are widely available but the choice can affect the operation cost. For printing text only, you can use low quality printer paper. Glossy papers are used for printing photographs and cost a little higher.
