Yes, it's probably an Allen wrench. If you don't have the tool solidly in the screw head, or if the tip of the Allen wrench is worn or rounded, it can easily strip the hole in the screw head and make it look round rather than hex. You could try using a new Allen wrench, or grinding the one you have down slightly to get good, clean edges. Then when you place the Allen wrench in the screw head again, tap it in with a hammer until it has a good solid grip.
