22 year old considering lap band, any advice or information?
hello, I am a 22 year old mom of a 15 month old.
I have been struggling with my weight ever since 14 years old.
After having my daughter my weight just blew over.
I am 5'6 nearly 230 pounds.
I have serious problem with food. After my daughter was born I have just given up.
I understand that lap band is not a easy way out, that it is just a tool to get me started to become healthy.
I gained almost 20 lb in just few months. Weight gain have gotten more rapid due to stress.
I am gaining about lb every week.
I have not yet spoke to my doctor but done so much research that I can honestly say it is going to be a challenge, but I am willing to for my family.
I am going to talk to my doctor sometimes next month and want to be sure that he is going to recommend only the best for me.
what are some information, ( any information... what doctor will recommend me and such)
any information of experience will be greatly appreciated.
thank you
First it is not "Quite Dangerous". More people die from Penicillin allergies every year then have problems with the band. Additionally most band death/injuries are because of complications that are common to all surgery, and not the band itself. The band is 100% reversible, so if you are in danger they can take it out. Also the adjustments are actually quite "ideal". It’s no more difficult than an ordinary checkup and immunizations. If you want a description of the process see my sources.
However, you have one problem. Unless you have obesity related health conditions (i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure, etc), you may not qualify with your current weight. A BMI of 40 is usually the cut off (yours is 37). However, a BMI of 35 may be high enough with an obesity related health conditions. You have to talk to a doctor. Also Adjusting is very "ideal". It's no more difficult then getting a minor check up (If you want a description of the adjustment process see my other answer in my sources.)
Anyway, getting the band was the best thing I have ever decided to do in my life (except for getting married and having kids). I had the band put in on May 12, 2008. I'm down 170lbs. After only 4 months I went from a BMI of 57 to 49. My Knee's and Back hurt a little still, but not like they did before. I was taking Percodan for the pain, now I'm taking Motrin. My heath is improving by leaps and bounds. I have had to stop taking my blood pressure meds and turn down my CPAP (sleep apnea) machine down twice. Now I'm at a BMI of 40. If I had gone into see the doctor about getting the band today, I would only be a borderline candidate. 40 is usually the cutoff but it can go down to 35 if you have other issues like diabetes.
Even if I stopped right here, it would have been worth it (not that I would be 100% satisfied). I even self paid ($16,000), so I obviously wanted my monies worth.
Check out my source, they have a lot of great information on the band and on other sugary options. However, I believe the band is the best, since it the only adjustable and reversible weight loss surgery. You can also find information such had how the doctors in your area are rated by there patients (since a recommendation from me would be for someone in my state.
