Can i purchase a ruger mini-14 target rifle in california?
If not, how come and what are the restrictions here in california. I want to compete in target shooting but they tell me to get a mini-14, all i have is a single shot bolt action rifle which they say i will be too slow to compete.
Yes, you can legally purchase a Ruger Mini-14 in CA. You will not be able to have high capacity magazines though. You will be limited to 10 round mags only.
I live in CA, I own a Mini-14, and I have shot in competitions. I can tell you that a Mini-14 is a terrible choice for competition shooting events. This rifle is not designed nor intended for competition use.
If you shoot silhouette competition, you're better off with your bolt action rifle.
If you plan on shooting in Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) events, I would recommend the Mini-14's big brother, the Springfield M1A National Match in 7.62 NATO. The Mini-14's .223 Rem cal. is way too light at 600 to 1000 yards. You will need a larger caliber for these long distances.
Competition shooting requires quite a bit of money, and time for training.
I recommend you actually go watch some events, and talk to some of the competitors before you start spending any of your hard earned money. The guys are usually pretty friendly, and they love discussing their favorite subject.
I wish you the best of luck.
