How to get rid of worms in my fish tank?
A few months ago the light bulb in my tank blew out and I didn't have the time to run to the store to replace it. Yesterday I bought a new light bulb and installed it. I noticed that there are tons of little thread like white worms all over the glass and gravel of my tank. There are also brown segmented looking worms at the top of my tank and trapped in my filter. (I changed my filter and water regularly and have not seen them before this. Also it is not fish poop) I have a 10 gallon fresh water tank with 1 male beta, 3 neon tetras, and 1 yellow mystery snail. I had a black mystery snail but it died a few months ago. I've also noticed that I can't find 2 of my neon's today. I saw only 2 yesterday but when I went to look again today I noticed that only my beta and 1 neon looked alive. I can't find the bodies of my other 2 neon's, so I'm not sure if they are dead. Also I think my mystery snail is dead as well. What are these worms and how do I get rid of them.
The white worms are a common problem with tanks that are overfed. They're called planaria and they're harmless; they're a sign your tank is overloaded with nutrients. You can try not feeding one day a week, and planting your tank with real aquarium plants to suck up and compete with the planaria for nutrients.
The brown worms are likely bug larvae of some sort, probably midge fly. They're harmless as well, but they'll turn into midges eventually, which can be an annoyance. Your fish may eat them, if you don't feed them and you can skim them off the top of the waterline.
Move all decorations and vacuum the substrate thoroughly after any fish death. Most fish are natural scavengers, so the bodies were probably consumed, but just to be sure, you should check all nooks and crannies - I had a small catfish wedge himself into a hole in my driftwood and die there. Dead fish release waste into the water, fouling it and also encouraging algae and planaria growth.
Check your water parameters with a liquid test kit to make sure your water isn't dangerous - ammonia and nitrites should be 0 and nitrates should stay under 30 ppm.
