What is the quickest, most hassle-free way remove all the strings of a piano?
As part of an experiment, I'm looking to remove all the strings of an upright piano to see what sounds I get with the hammers moving but striking at nothing. Does anyone what is the quickest and most hassle-free way of doing it? Save from getting a pair of wire-cutters and snapping every single string. I am not looking to re-string the piano when I'm done.
Well, the wire cutters would be a bad and dangerous idea anyway if you don't loosen the strings first. I think the last guys idea about a reversible electric drill with the right size socket and making sure you turn them counterclockwise to detune the strings would be the best way. I could save you time and just tell you you won't get a sound other than a faint clicking of the mechanical piano parts without the strings though. You do have some interesting ideas though don't you!
