How do I tell what size head guard I need?
I just moved up a belt in Karate and now I need to buy some gear for sparring. The gear from my dojo is too expensive so I'm trying to find some online. I am interested in a head guard from Piranha, but they don't have anywhere that tells how to pick the size. Some have suggested that your safest bet is always to go with a medium, but I don't know. I need some help please!
I normally buy gear in sizes based off of my clothing size. I normally wear L, so I buy L gear, or sometime XL to be safe, or M if I'm sure that the M from that brand will fit.
You could always just go into about any sporting goods store and find their martial arts/boxing section, and try on a head piece. If any store employees give you grief over trying on the gear, just explain to them that it's like trying on a pair of jeans or something before you buy them. Most martial arts/boxing gear isn't in sealed packaging for this reason. Mind you, hand wraps and mouth pieces and such are sealed for obvious reasons, but gloves and headgear can normally be opened to try on.
Of course, take that with a grain of salt. There's as much variation in sizes between brands of martial arts gear as there is in clothes. For example, I wear a S/M in UFC glove sizes, but I wear a L in Everlast. Go figure.
