Which is easier to work with, either aircraft aluminium or titanium?
In as far as milling, maching, special tools needed? Can wastage be recycled?are there added benefits on better surface finishes between the two?
By aircraft aluminum, I will assume you are referring to the most commonly used aluminum alloy in the aerospace industry, 7075-T651. Also, by titanium I will assume you are referring also to the most commonly used titanium alloy in the aerospace industry, 6Al-4V. While there are a host of other considerations to take into account when selecting either of the above materials for a specific use, including corrosion resistance and resistance to wear, workability is a prime concern. The 7075 is by far the easiest to machine since its hardness is the lowest, Brinell 150, compared to that of the titanium, Brinell 334. It is also important to note that many cutting tools are made from similar titanium alloys for just this property.
Look into the ASTM database to determine whether 7075's non-weldability, high-recyclability, and poorer fatigue resistance are of concern to you. Also, be sure to use especially sharp and hardened tooling when working with the titanium to prevent the material from work hardening and snapping your cutters. Lastly, both materials are especially challenging in the area of tapping. Aluminum tends to loose its threads so often requires inserts while the titanium is prone to galling.
Oh, and don't forget to consider pricing considerations as the price for titanium stock recently went up a great deal thanks to recent military and aerospace projects.
