What drill should i buy and why, makita bhp454 or dewalt dcd950?
I will be using the drill to drill good size holes through walls, 2x4s, 4x4s and to drill in concrete. There both about the same price so just wanted to see what your thoughts were thanks.
Thanks for the quick responses. Both these drills are hammer drills and li-ions makita lxt rated at 560lb of torque and the dewalt xrp at 450 uwo which from reading it says 500lb of torque. I'm an electrician so I do a lot of drilling mainly wood but every now and then masonary and metal. So far I've used the regular makitas not the lxt and the dewalts giving out so its time to get a new drill. If you've used these what are some pros and cons of them. Thanks for your time.
DeWALT-
Pros- Better masonry "hammer " action.
Cons- Very heavy and uses old style Ni-Cad batteries that will have to be replaced often and cost you much more money in the long run.
Makita-
Pros- Best Li-Ion batteries on the market, Charge fast (dead to full=30 minutes) lasts very long time.
Cons- Doesn't have a powerful hammer action, more of a vibrator than hammer.
My suggestion- Neither
Any decent Masonry Drill corded or cordless is going to be really heavy. If you are mainly going in to wood it makes no sense to lug around a heavy masonry drill all the time. It will be uncomfortable and be impossible to get into small spaces.
I would suggest you purchase two drills. One lightweight drill for your everyday wood and metal drilling applications such as the Makita 1/2 in. 18-Volt Cordless Compact Drill Driver Model # BDF452HW $179 at the Home Depot
with all the money you save on the 1st drill I would get a corded hammer drill for your occasional masonry jobs. such as DEWALT 7/8 in. Compact Sds Rotary Hammer Kit
Model # D25023K $179
This way you have the best of both worlds.
I view drills like cars, if you had to commute 100 miles a day it wouldn't be practical to buy a huge gas guzzler because you had to tow your boat around during the summer sometimes. You would want a truck and a small commuter car for during the week.
