Why are my new 5/4 x 6 PT deck boards cupping after 2 days in the sun?
I'm installing my 16x24 deck myself as a DIY project. I initially used decking boards 5/4 x 6 #2 type treated boards and after 2 days they were cupping and checking. I laid them with no spaces as the lumber yard recommended for fresh treated wood (since it will shrink) and I used #9 x 2 1/2" screws, pre-drilling ALL holes with a 13/64" drill bit. I was not happy and removed all boards and proceeded to purchase a new set of lumber. This new batch was hand picked by me at LOWES and I chose to go with the premium #1 with severe weather additive (water repellent x3) which really looks nice. I installed half the floor and let it sit for 2 days and again the cupping has already happened. Please help me understand where I'm going wrong... I'm running out of energy, time, and money!!
The sun is drying the top of the board out faster than the bottom causing the top to shrink faster than the rest of the board. They may even out over time as the rest of it dries out. Treated lumber is prone to this because it is kiln dried before treating and not after so the moisture content is higher than should be. If you have the time just lay the boards out in the sun and flip them over every day for a week and they will dry out more evenly.
