How do I get my intermediate shaft out?
In my 1990 Toyota Camry, i have an american made car, my axle is stuck and won't budge. I've taken off the outer boot so all that is remaining is the intermediate shaft, or the part that has the bearing and splines. I'm told that there are clips in the splines that need to be turned a certain way so the snap ring falls and then i knock it out. I've tried this with no avail. I've tried prying, i drilled a hole and put a slap hammer in it that is directly in the middle of the shaft. nothing. The only thing that i haven't tried is cutting a piece of wood or metal to put in between the body and differential. This would help because when i hit the axle with the slap hammer, i see the whole engine moving, and absorbing the impact of the slap.
Any other ideas on why this won't come out would be greatly appreciated.
Taking out the intermediate shaft is easy but hard to take off. Whoever told you that the clips have to be turned a certain way so that the snap ring falls off is hopefully pulling your leg. The surclip that is on the shaft is there to prevent the shaft from coming out. In order for the shaft not to come out easily there needs to be a great force to pull it out or a large shock force. I have taken drive shafts out from many different vehicles and they are all the same. You have to hammer them out. You dont need a sledge hammer just a regular hammer. Just use the same force like as if you were hammering a nail it, it should then just pop off. You can't pry it off and I would say you wasted your time drilling a hole to use the slide hammer but with a lot of force it should be able to come off that way.
When you reinstall the axle, you should use the same amount of force like as if you were driving a spike into a piece of would. You should feel the axle seat into the transaxle.
