Which rotary cutter should I buy for patchwork?
What is the best brand of rotary cutter for beginning patchwork and what size should I get. I have heard of Fiskars and Olfa and know you get different sizes. Is there anything else I need to think about?
Personally I don't like the ones that are "tension loaded" for extruding the blade, or however that's characterized.
The Olfas, for example, at least used to have a shield for the blade that had to be retracted in a separate step (and would stay that way without further pressure), but some of the others won't retract till the blade is put in place and pressed on (and they'll retract as soon as the blade is lifted, even a bit)... I can't really see the blade's exact position and what I'm doing with those tension-loaded shields, and just don't find cutters with that design good for me.
(If you're prone to accidents with blades and other sharp stuff, those kinds of shields may well be the *best* for you though 
...)
As for the sizes, the middle-large or very-large size is better than the smallest size because of the amount of torque? required to move the blade along. . . . the wider the diameter of the blade, the easier it will be to push along.
Some rotary cutters also have curved handles and that might be good especially when cutting a bunch of stuff at one time, but otherwise the straight-handled ones are fine.
When you use them, you'll need *thick* plastic rulers and shaped rulers as guides so the blade won't slip up onto the ruler (this happens really fast) and cut your finger... seriously, just don't try using a thin plastic ruler, or even a thin metal one.
Be really careful not to accidentally roll the cutter over a pin too because you'll create a micro-chink in the blade and that section of the blade won't cut after that (which means that after a cut you make later, you'll get places where one or two threads didn't get sliced and you'll have to go back over those spots --a hassle).
Of course, don't use your rotary cutters with anything but fabric or you'll at least dull the blade.
I do like to keep my older duller-blade rotary cutters around though for cutting paper, plastic, and all kinds of things!
And of course, you'll need a self-healing mat to use the cutter on.
You can also use the self-healing mat with an Exacto-type knife for doing other things, or even with a larger utility knife--although since those make deeper cuts, I'll generally use the back side of the mat for them.
And btw if you don't already know, those mats will warp *very quickly* if left in much heat at all and not laid out perfectly flat... and they're impossible to get flat again. So do be careful where you store your mat, and what position it's in even in the car if you take it anywhere...btdt.)
