Two questions about corded drills and bits - re-drilling a larger hole and diamond bits?

I had two questions:
1) I am working on a project making a workbench. I drilled holes with a bit that was on the small side of what I need. It was a mistake I made. I am trying to redrill the hole with a slightly larger bit (the first bit claimed to be 3/8 but wasn't. It was a little short of it. I am using a dewalt 3/8 this time which is a little thicker. But I think because of the threading in the wood, my bit keeps getting stuck and not moving through. I need to keep drilling a little, reversing the drill to pull it out, switching it back to drill and drilling it again, way too many times. It is cumbersome, and I cant help but feel it would be bad for the drill. What can I do to re-drill the hole in a better way?
2) Can diamond bits be used on wood? What are the disadvantages and potential difficulties?

You need to REALLY hang on to the drill as a high speed drill WILL tend to feed itself much to quickly through an already drilled hole, and when it catches, it will give your wrist a good jolt. You also want to put very LITTLE pressure in the downward direction. Let the drill do all the work. Unlike drilling the first hole where you had to add foreword pressure, in this case you want to add almost none.
Diamond bits are for VERY hard substances, wood NOT being one of them.
