how can i attach a metal sheet to the underside of a cabinet?
I'm making a magnetic spice rack. I want the spice bottles to hang under my kitchen cabinet. How do i nail the steel sheet (12" x 24") up so its secure & wont fall under the weight of the spices (there will be about 40 bottles)? will i need to drill holes in the metal first? how do i hammer up?
please explain like i know nothing about being a handyman, which i don't.
I'd use contact cement with a few 1/2" long #6 pan head sheet metal screws for additional support. Drill 3/16" holes (any sharp drill bit will work) in your sheet where you want to put a screws (corners and a few in the center). Apply a thin coat of contact cement with a disposable brush (not foam) to both surfaces. When it's dry, CAREFULLY position it because you only get one shot at it.
Another idea is to do this whole thing on a piece of 3/4 or 1/2" plywood so you can remove it if you move or get tired of it. Contact cement is forever. Or you can do like Jane says, and only use sheet metal screws but then you have to work around all the heads. I assume your steel sheet is pretty thin (1/16" or less), so you can't countersink flathead screws, at least not easily.
