How is the two-speed feauture of a DC coordless drill constructed?
A two-speed switch selects between resistors connected in series with the motor
A two-speed switch selects between full battery voltage or a tap in the battery pack
A two-speed switch connects the batteries to two different field windings
The ON/OFF switch has two contacts that are enabled depeing upon the amount the trigger is depressed.
If this is multiple choice then depending on the manufacturer, a couple of answers are good. The two field windings, although possible, make for a very expensive motor so that you won't find. The on/off switch with two contacts is similar to the speed resistor one. One of those would be my choice if these were all I had to choose from. The battery tap wouldn't work well because you would drain a portion of the battery and when you switched to the full battery there would be a huge surge inside the battery pack to balance out the two parts. In all practicality though, most manufacturers use a slide type resistor in the trigger to give Variable speed. That's easier than all the extra stuff needed for just two speeds.
