When shifting my truck there's a clunk in the rear end.?
I have a 2007 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 Manual. When I put my foot on the clutch it clunks a little bit in the rear end, and every time I take my foot off the clutch and onto the gas it clunks. Also if I step on the gas hard it clunks in the rear end. I forgot to mention this only happens when I am driving and happens in all gears, also my truck is not geared for my tires so it does have to work harder to move my 31 inch tires. I think that maybe the splines in the driveshaft are binding from the extra power needed to move the tires but I don't want to drill the boot if I don't have to. What could this be? Is it probably the splines?
My car had this symptom years ago. On the highway I would step on the gas and hear (and feel) a clunk in the rear. Release the gas and the same. One day, on the way to work suddenly I heard a "BANG BANG BANG BANG..." near my feet, then the back end of the car jumped up about 8 inches. Well, my drive shaft had fallen off the car! The U-joint snapped. If I had gotten under the car earlier when I first started hearing the problem, I probably could have prevented all that damage by tightening the bolts. I would strongly recommend you get under there and take a look, or have a mechanic do it.
